To support MSc students, we're developing an ACT-based training programme

How We Want To Help

We, Dr Annie Gascoyne and Ross McIntosh, are champions of evidence-based behavioural science in the workplace, and are experts in developing and delivering programmes to share the application of this approach with individuals, facilitators, leaders, teams and organisations.

We recognise that, in the workplace, people can at times feel challenged and even overwhelmed by uncertainty and complexity, and can become disconnected from a sense of personal meaning in their work and personal lives. The global pandemic has, for many people, exacerbated these feelings, impacting their sense of exhaustion, anxiety, depression and burnout. Our ACT programmes, developed for the workplace, are designed to help people towards healthier and more effective outcomes, by becoming more aware of the qualities they most want to express in daily behaviour and by relating more skilfully to difficult or unhelpful thoughts and feelings.

We were both students not so long ago, and we recognise how relevant ACT skills can be for supporting our fellow students, pursuing your academic and professional work. We also recognise how useful and impactful it can be, for those of you who are interested in reliable, evidence-based practices for improving effectiveness and wellbeing at work, to learn how to train ACT skills in others, as a springboard for starting your careers.

Our Training Proposal & Assumptions

To support students, we’re proposing to develop training just for you. Based on our experience, we're currently thinking it might look something like this:

Module 1: Using ACT to Enhance Your Own Effectiveness and Wellbeing
The aim of this module would be to cultivate your own psychological flexibility, to enhance your effectiveness and wellbeing, as you work through your dissertation research, and beyond. By using and applying ACT in your own life it will help you develop the skills to effectively and authentically facilitate them for others in the workplace.

Module 2: Using ACT to Enhance Others’ Effectiveness and Wellbeing
The aim of this module would be to provide you with the knowledge and skills to deliver ACT-based training to working populations, to cultivate their flexibility, effectiveness and wellbeing in workplace settings.

This would only be available for those who of you who regularly practice ACT/psychological flexibility for yourselves (e.g. following participation on Module 1 or with evidence of equivalent training).


As a starting point, we’ve made the following assumptions that we'd like to check with you.

Module 1 would be held in June, after the bulk of exams are finished, and as you switch your focus to your dissertations.
Module 2 would be held in September, after dissertations are submitted, and as you switch your focus to your careers.
To avoid taking up big chunks of your time, we’re proposing 2.5-hour sessions, once a week, for 4 weeks (for each module).
Sessions would be online, with solo work, pair-work in breakouts, as well as work in small group to experiment and practice with in Module 2.

Who We Are

Ross McIntosh

Ross is an organisational and coaching psychologist. As a practitioner, he uses evidence-based psychology in all areas of his portfolio career.

In his research role at City, University of London, Ross designs and delivers Personal Resilience Training for both the public and private sector, based upon Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and wider contextual behavioural science. He lectures in organisational psychology at City, University of London, Goldsmiths and Birkbeck.

He also works part-time as the in-house organisational psychologist for an agency of HM Treasury. Here he focuses on leadership development, psychological flexibility and senior recruitment.

He founded the start-up, People Soup which aims to cultivate psychological flexibility in organisations. He has recently delivered evidence-based training to staff in the NHS, Civil Service, Nectar Loyalty, teachers, a global American bank and a variety of ballet companies including the Birmingham Royal Ballet, Rambert, Scottish Ballet and The Royal Ballet. Most recently he designed and delivered a development workshop for a group of Senior Leaders at a multinational technology company. In 2020 he’s been working on the design and deliver of interventions for specialist paramedics, wellbeing leads in schools and nurses in Uganda.

Prior to his portfolio career, Ross spent over 20 years in Senior HR roles in Government. He holds a BSc (Hons) in psychology from the University of Dundee and Masters degrees in Human Resource Management and Organisational Psychology. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) and also hosts the popular podcast – People Soup – nourishing the mind, flourishing at work. Dr Annie Gascoyne

Annie is an organisational psychologist, trainer, facilitator, consultant and coach who uses behavioural science to equip people and organisations with skills to achieve their aims, with a greater sense of wellbeing, meaning and purpose.

Annie has over 20 years of experience across a wide range of organisations from multinational corporations through to entrepreneurial start-ups, and from financial services to charities. She has worked as an external consultant and coach, and as an internal manager of people, projects, operations and change.

Annie’s transition to organisational psychology was driven by her desire to help organisations and their people to work together more successfully and healthily. Her doctoral thesis, which researched organisational and psychological flexibility, provides her practice with a leading-edge, evidence-based perspective for improving our world of work.

She is also a visiting lecturer at the Institute of Management Studies (IMS), Goldsmiths, University of London, teaching Organisational Behaviour & Health, and Training, Coaching and Counselling courses on the MSc Occupational Psychology programme.

Yeah -so this episode is a bit different – you’ll hear me being interviewed by Thato Mathebula and G-Man – from the Maintain the Design podcast based in Johannesberg. I was really chuffed to be asked by the guys, their podcast is about creative culture and lifestyle in various industries and niches such as business, art, music and fashion . They say “Not being limited in our topics of conversation is our vibe!” I really really like their approach and in this part we chat about anxiety, creating the conditions to maximise the possibility of tangible results from workplace training, creativity and loads more.
